I’ve said it before, I’m not a big fan of the winter holidays. I hate the cold, the desperate rush for gifts and food, as if the end of the world were coming, the crowded city. Maybe the fact that I alone add up to this feeling, although I have spent these holidays in various places in the world, with other people, so I would say I’m not necessarily affected. But I know that single people can have great difficulties during this period, I was in that situation, I read about it, I know people like that.
But beyond these feelings, I also have a great deal of joy: that for a few days (25-26, December 31 in the afternoon, January 1-2-3), everyone cares about anything other than what they do all year long. And this type of care gives me time and space. For what? To look at things differently.
I had the feeling many times, in 2020 more than ever, that I was like in the beginning, in the Fortnite game. There you choose a skin, you choose your weapons, you play alone or in a team, you can train, you feel the surroundings, you don’t venture too much in the first game. One thing is vital, however, as you learn quickly: to move, to risk, to explore the territory, to look for possible dangers, enemies, to look at yourself from several perspectives.
During the year it seems to me that we feel like at the beginning of the game: we patrol in a better known area, we don’t risk, we do what we know, we don’t really go up, on a metaphorical rock, from where we can look around. We have things to do, we work. But to stay only in one place, no matter how safe it may seem, is the most dangerous. You don’t know where other players come from that can hurt or eliminate you from the game. Movement, continuous search are not only strategic, but I would even say essential.
The holiday season is good to look at from several perspectives. Precisely because we no longer have interruptions, no one wants anything (more or less), our mind can run in several directions, explore, make strategies, like the skin in the game.
I know you’ll say we can do this at other times. Yes, but when do you have the best chance that almost the entire planet will be disconnected and not be interrupted?
