Over the last few weeks the city has been busy as never before. Regardless of the hour, it was busy as if everyone was running in search of something. I usually go to the Promenada Shopping Center because it seems to me that it is the least crowded. Having been there recently I only found a parking spot after 4 laps of the parking lot. There are no discounts in stores but there is a frenzy for presents that has increased more and more over time.
We want to buy presents to surprise our loved ones and make them happy, or to make ourselves happy by giving presents to others. December is a complicated month for many people. There is a lot of turmoil even though we have many free days, it is colder and darker even though the city is filled with Christmas lights, we enjoy countless parties and yet we grow sad at our own loneliness and the loneliness of the ones around us.
In a store, a salesperson told me that she could not believe that even on the 24th there are customers who are still shopping. I told her that maybe they are lost in their attempt to run from their loneliness and so they walk aimlessly until they get tired and then go home to sleep.
People make themselves busy so that they will not have to face themselves. We are afraid to be alone. Loneliness is not a bad thing, if you are at peace with your own self. If not, then you wander like a moth around a light bulb, you hit yourself and it hurts, but you recover and start all over.
What are we really looking for?
I believe that we are all looking to give and receive a bit of love.
When I was a child I was fascinated by snails- the ones that you could find on the street, in the grass, the ones which travelled with their homes on their back. I sang to them so they would show their tentacles. A breeze was enough to make them retract their tentacles. It seems to me that this was the definition of sensitivity.
Likewise, the souls of lonely people have a distinct sensitivity in December. They can reach agony or ecstasy easily.
These people only need to be told that we are there if they need something. I think it is a good thing not to forget them, not to judge them but to show that we care.
