That’s how many people think, unfortunately!

There are a few Romanian creators that I appreciate a lot. When I say creators, I mean in various fields: fashion, jewellery, accessories, writers, musicians. They all create something that is no less than what creators in other countries create. Unfortunately, however, in the eyes of many of our compatriots, a novel does not have the same value. I see this in my company’s field too, when someone asks for a foreign trainer. There are good foreign trainers, there are good Romanian trainers, there are less good trainers everywhere, of course. Not everything that comes from abroad is qualitative, not everything that comes from Romania is good or bad by definition.

I have discovered some good contemporary writers in the last few years: Ioana Bâldea Constantinescu, Horia Corches, Adina Popescu, Marius Constantinescu, Ana Barton, Telespan, Lavinia Braniste, to name just a few I’ve read recently. I laughed out loud, I was moved to tears by many of their pages. Ah, not to forget Tatiana Tibuleac, from the Republic of Moldova, with her book, The Summer My Mother Had Green Eyes, an achingly beautiful book

I discovered good designers. Mihai Manciu is one of them. He has worked with the world’s great fashion houses, has had his own collections for several years.

I had the privilege to meet a Romanian pianist who has played on big stages around the world; he is very young, appreciated in the world, but in Romania he is rarely invited to concerts. Sergiu Tuhuțiu has played in the United States, in the UK. I was really surprised to hear a man of culture say that Romania should invite young pianists from abroad, because it doesn’t have many. Or maybe we don’t give them the same weight, since they are Romanians.

I also met Romanian jewellers who amazed me with their creations. I like Utopic, by Mona Vulpoiu, Miruna Belicovici, Vise in Argint, for example. Not to mention another Romanian jeweler living in NY, awarded several times for his creations.

Many of us would pay thousands of euros for something that says big on a certain brand but we negotiate or find a Romanian creator too expensive.

On Romanian Language Day, I suggest we take a look at Romanian designers. We will be impressed.
