A few year ago, my mother when through a difficult surgery; she got sick and the source of the problem had to be removed immediately. Afterwards, for 5 year she had to go through medical test every 3 months. Then 2 years later during every quarter she was trying to avoid the tests: she was telling me that she did not have the time, that she did not want to, that she had had enough, she was tired and whatnot. Every time I told her in a serious voice: ‘Listen here, do you want get whooped?’ She would laugh and after a few days she would go to the doctor.

Like my mother, I think we all have moments when we get tired, we lack the energy, we do not want to do anything, and it might seem as if we wanted to lie down on the ground and start crying the same way as when we were children.

This state of semi-abandonment of our own being is dangerous. If we lie on the ground, if we let go, it will be much harder to get up than if we were to keep our balance. I know that it is difficult; I know that there are times when the light at the end of the tunnel seems to have disappeared or we are unable to see it. It might be a good thing to have someone to call and help us get back on our feet; a friend; a coach, a counsellor, someone who cares and knows how to listen.

If that someone is not around, then we will have to tell ourselves: ‘Listen here, do you want to get whooped?’
