I like this expression: change your place, change your luck. It’s good to move from time to time, a change can bring surprises. And when we say surprises, we all hope they are positive!
My mother had a habit, when I was little, of changing the furniture in the house every few months. No, not buy new. She’d switch places, I don’t know how she found so many permutations to do in a relatively small house. This need she had for novelty always intrigued me, this creativity she had that she didn’t get a chance to showcase in big projects.
In addition to the ones at home, which we were always getting off track, she could design clothes beautifully. She worked with some fashion houses, I was envious of her talent to quickly sketch a dress, a skirt.
But for me, things in the house are better left alone. I have other kinds of changes. For example, for several years now, I’ve been going to another place in the world for my birthday. My superstition is that if I’m somewhere else for my birthday, chances are something will change. Not necessarily because I’m unhappy. But I’m curious to see what the possibilities are. So I’ve been for 3-4 days to several places in Europe, like Paris, Athens, Istanbul, Vienna, Madrid, Lisbon, but I’ve also been to Edinborough, Dubai, Singapore, New York.
I have a friend who moves house every 10 years. He says he doesn’t want to get too used to anywhere, that it helps him stay young.
Of course, there will be some who will say that we are running away from something, that it’s good to become aware of that something we are running away from. And I agree, up to a point. Because beyond that point, I think the world offers us so much variety, there is so much potential, it’s a shame not to explore it. Isn’t it a shame to waste a life in just one place and think that’s the world? Between still water and flowing water, the latter will always be more attractive.
